More art is the focus of The Courtyard Gallery in the new, recently expanded gallery space—more color, more variety, more opportunity for fabulous art at reasonable prices. The gallery moved from the downstairs courtyard location in the Good Templars Hall at the corner of Quincy and Washington Streets in October 2007 to the NEW location at 940 Washington Street. Art Walk on June 7th 2008 introduced the newly expanded space with a show of local artists. Along with the work of Susan Hazard, the gallery includes artwork by Brooke Allison, Rae Belkin, Jim Daly, Kathy Francis, Gary Griswold, Karen Huguley, Kelly Kellogg, Virginia King, Mary Lynn Maloney, Wanda Mawhinney, Arliss Newcomb, Sandra Offutt, Michelle Stay, and Diana Whitney.

Brooke Allison brings the natural world to an evocative, sensitive nature through her signature pastel technique. Rae Belkin’s meditative modern acrylic paintings have a calm, balanced atmosphere which contrasts with vivacious, spontaneous acrylics by Wanda Mawhinney. Kelly Kellogg’s masterful color saturated photographs capture the serenity yet intense diversity of land and waterscapes. Gary Griswold is exhibiting his watercolors and giclee’ reproductions of nautical themes, very familiar to the Port Townsend area. Sandra Offutt plein air oil paintings are serene yet vibrating with an inner energy of light-filled life, contrasting with Diana Whitney’s realistic oil paintings of captivating glimpses of wildlife in their home environment. Karen Huguley focuses on the details of life, in flower and small objects still life paintings, as Mary Lynn Maloney utilizes assemblages to portray creative and evocative vignettes of life. Virginia King peoples her world with her whimsical and entertaining character dolls, with a backdrop of dyed and printed material wall panels, while Michelle Stay stretches the boundaries of decoration with colorful jewels of glass buttons. Kathy Francis brings a love of the outdoors and the changing light to her plein air landscapes, while Jim Daly offers a stylized yet sophisticated world in acrylic paintings. Jim Jacobson oil paintings illustrate his interest in the natural world—both outdoor studies and still lifes from the studio. Arliss Newcomb is the latest addition to the gallery, with her powerful and sensual stone carvings. All these wonderful artists, along with oils in palette knife technique Susan Hazard paintings, fill the gallery space with enjoyable color and delightful energy—a feast for the senses, and all available for you to see at The Courtyard Gallery. Come and rediscover the historic Fountain District shopping area during Art Walk, Saturday evening, July 5th, from 5  to 8 p.m.
